Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my conversion take?

We aim for a four to six week completion schedule after the satisfactory completion of the design process and payment of deposit. The Custom Shop source materials and components from a range of suppliers, and availability delays are not unknown across the supply chain, we therefore ask customers to be patient if we are obliged to pass these on. Similarly, some specific requests for materials and finishes might require a slightly longer lead-in time, and delay the overall completion of the build.

We recommend customers leave plenty of time for us to finish your build to our elite standards, and The Custom Shop will always remain in communication during the process.

How much does a conversion cost?

Every camper conversion is different, and the final price of the van reflects a range of variables from base vehicle specification, conversion features, finishes and additional extras. We try to be as transparent with our prices as possible, and a detailed breakdown of conversion costs and the cost of individual components is available on our pricing page. An idea of the price of a converted van is available on our stock campers page.

The price of each conversion reflects the individual nature of the project, and The Custom Shop reserves the right to evaluate and price the labour and installation tasks at our own discretion.

Can you advise on materials?

We are always delighted to discuss materials and finishes with our customers during the design consultation. The Custom Shop work with a range of suppliers that enable us to offer conversions for a variety of different functions (these usually land somewhere between a dedicated focus on either functionality or comfort). As a general rule, we strongly advise you to think carefully about the intended use of your camper before the design consultation, as this information will enable us to provide you with the best guidance possible.

Our team includes family campers, mountain bikers and climbers, and we are always happy to share our advice and guidance on the best choice for customer builds.

Which vans can be converted?

The Custom Shop works with Volkswagen Transporter T6 and T6.1 vans, these are the latest and (in our expert opinion!) best base vehicles for a modern campervan. We focus on a particular van in order to be able to manufacture and install components and finishes that we know will fit and work precisely with the base vehicle. Please bear in mind that we also sell a range of camper components and gear that is non-vehicle specific, and are always happy to advise on customer self-builds.

In theory, any van (or vehicle) can be converted for camper use, and we are happy to support you with your own conversion journey if we can.

What is the design process?

The unique design process at The Custom Shop is very simple: firstly, we will arrange a personal design consultation with Ben Morgan, our founder and creative director, where you will outline your requirements and goals for the build. Secondly, we will produce a photorealistic 3D render of your design for your approval, this will become the blueprint for the conversion. Thirdly, the expert workshop team at The Custom Shop will turn the digital concept into a reality at our cutting-edge workshop in Liverpool. Finally, you will receive your completed vehicle at our Liverpool showroom - simple!

Our design process aims to give you full creative control and visualisation before the vehicle enters the workshop, and enables you to see in detail the work we will undertake.
